Blindness in India is a very acute problem. Every third blind in the world is Indian and there are only about 14,000 ophthalmologists in India to tackle the problems of the eye. The number of patients is more compared to the ophthalmologist available so more number of ophthalmologists are required who can treat these patients with modern preventive and curativemeasures. Shri Ganapati Netralaya was started with an objective of providing the best possible eye-care services in the region, particularly to the rural population, by the most economical methods, with most modern & state of the art technology directed towards prevention, diagnosis and treatment, to all sections of society irrespective of caste, creed or economic considerations.
The other objective being training of the ophthalmologist who have passed their post graduation and awarding them fellowships in general ophthalmology so that they can setup their own hospitals and utilize the teaching for the benefit of the needy patients. The new leap today is in the making of new ophthalmologist by providing them DNB training in ophthalmology.
There are certain diseases for which treatment is still in a preliminary stage. Research facilities are available so that certain diseases can be investigated.
